Avenir LNG delivers first bio-LNG to Swedish ferry operator

London-based small scale LNG player Avenir LNG has completed its first bio-LNG delivery to Swedish ferry operator Destination Gotland, the company announced on July 31.

The fuel was delivered by Avenir’s bunker vessel, Avenir Aspiration, at the Port of Visby in Sweden. The ISCC-certified bio-LNG was produced in Europe and loaded at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, before being transported to Visby.

Marcus Risberg, CEO of Destination Gotland, commented, “The possibility to use bio-LNG ensures that we can provide our services in an even more sustainable way, thereby reducing the impact on the environment and population.”

For sourcing bio-LNG, Avenir collaborates with various biofuel traders who have access to physical and mass-balanced bio-LNG at multiple European terminals.

Destination Gotland and Avenir signed a multi-year contract for the supply of LNG to the dual-fuel RoPax ferries MS Gotland and MS Visby in 2022. Since then, Avenir has conducted up to 20 ship-to-ship LNG bunker operations per month in the Swedish ports of Visby and Nynashamn.
