Anaergia secures contract for RNG facility in California

Canada’s Anaergia has signed a C$13mn ($9.5mn) technology supply contract with the City of Riverside, California, to upgrade anaerobic digestion infrastructure at the Riverside Water Quality Control Plant (RWQCP), aiming to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from organic waste and sewage sludge, the company announced on August 6.

The contract will support the development of an RNG facility by Anaergia under an existing long-term lease with the City. Funding is expected to come partly from grants provided by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) and federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Serving over 300,000 people, the RWQCP has a treatment capacity of 46mn gallons/day. The upgraded anaerobic digestion technologies and new waste receiving equipment will help divert food waste from landfills, aiding compliance with California’s SB1383 legislation, which aims to reduce methane emissions.

Anaergia’s technology converts organic waste into RNG, fertiliser, and water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company operates projects on four continents, serving the municipal solid waste, wastewater, agriculture, and food processing industries.
