Apollo to lead studies for UK carbon capture hub

UK engineering firm Apollo has been chosen to conduct £100,000 ($126,738) studies for the 7CO2 carbon capture and shipping hub in southwest England, the company announced on August 7.

The 7CO2 initiative is designed to support local and regional decarbonisation efforts across southwest England, the Midlands, and West Wales, aiming to attract up to £1.3bn of investment to the Bristol region and over £4bn to the broader areas.

Located in Avonmouth, the 7CO2 hub will enable the permanent storage of CO2 captured from post-combustion processes. Apollo’s studies, funded by 7CO2 and the UK Innovate Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan (LIDP) grant, will focus on three main areas: the feasibility of transporting CO2 by rail from regional emitters, the identification and evaluation of land for industrial decarbonisation projects (such as clean power, hydrogen production, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel production), and the exploration of cost-effective power supply options, including renewable energy generation and small modular nuclear reactors.

Apollo will collaborate closely with key stakeholders and partners, including Suez, Viridor, SSE, EDF, Network Rail, National Grid, GB Rail Freight, VTG, Bristol Port, Petrofac, Ameresco, Bristol City Council, Western Gateway, and Hydrogen South West.
