Avenir lands three-year LNG bunkering deal

UK-based Avenir announced on June 14 it had entered into a three-year LNG bunkering supply deal with Swedish ferry-liner Destination Gotland, covering delivery of up to 40,000 metric tons of the fuel annually.

Avenir will refuel the M/S Gotland and M/S Visby passenger ferries via ship-to-ship transfer, using its 7,500-m3 Avenir Ascension bunkering vessel, the company said. Avenir Ascension was delivered from a Chinese shipyard earlier this year. LNG bunkering operations started on June 8 and will continue through to the second quarter of 2025.

"In the coming months we will continue to expand our operations across the Baltic Sea," Avenir LNG CEO Peter Mackey said in a statement. "We look forward to building this long term partnership with Destination Gotland and for many safe and reliable deliveries going forward."

The Baltic Sea is a hotspot for LNG bunkering, and the fuel is particularly popular among ferry owners because of the reduced pollution, and the fact that natural gas engines are much quieter than diesel ones. Destination Gotland has been using LNG as a shipping fuel since 2018.
