Azerbaijan Energy Minister Natiq Aliev Dies
Azerbaijan’s energy minister Natig Aliev, 69, died in the morning of June 9, a week after he was hospitalised following a heart attack. He had been receiving treatment in Istanbul.
Aliev was CEO of state oil firm Socar from 1993 until 2005, when he became minister for industry and energy. Among his achievements was the successful lobbying for the Southern Gas Corridor, the European Union's first major diversification of pipeline gas supplies, which he expected to bring revenues for the state coffers for over 50 years.
