Baker Hughes reported the North American rig count increased by six from the previous week, with oil activity during the week ending May 28 leading the gains in both the US and Canada.

The North American rig count through May 28 was 519, up from the previous week’s count of 513.

The US rig count saw gains only in oil activity, which saw the rig count improve by three. None of the shale basins in the Lower 48 US states saw an increase in natural gas work, leading to a net loss of one rig for the week.

The Permian and Eagle Ford shale basins supported the growth in upstream activity focused on oil.

For the week, 78.6% of US upstream activity was in oil, while the remaining was in natural gas.

For Canada, Saskatchewan led the weekly gains, with three more rigs in service than during the previous week. Alberta saw its rig count increase by one.

Using data provided by Enverus, Baker Hughes does not break Canadian oil and gas activity down to the provincial level. For the week, 54.8% of the rig activity was focused on natural gas, with the rest in oil.

Rig deployment off the Canadian coast of Newfoundland remained the same at one. Fourteen rigs were working in the US waters of the Gulf of Mexico and all that activity was in oil.
