B&W receives full NTP for Indiana coal-to-gas conversion

Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) said November 14 its B&W Thermal business segment had received full notice to proceed under an agreement for the $246mn coal-to-gas conversion of AES Indiana’s Petersburg Generating Station.

The project is expected to help AES Indiana phase out its use of coal and reduce CO2 emissions by converting the 1,160 MW Petersburg plant’s two coal-fired boilers to use natural gas. Repowering of the two units was approved earlier this month by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.

B&W Thermal will design and install the plant’s new natural gas system, air systems and other equipment, while B&W subsidiary Babcock & Wilcox FPS will supply burners, ignitors, controls and other technologies. Babcock & Wilcox Construction will perform the construction portion of the project.

“We began engineering and design work earlier this year and are pleased to be moving forward with this important project for AES Indiana,” said Chris Riker, senior vice president, B&W Thermal. “We continue to see significant interest from utilities in the US and elsewhere that want to switch from coal to cleaner fuels, such as natural gas, to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the overall environmental impact of their generating assets.”

The conversion is expected to be completed in Q1 2027.
