BP Intervenes to Stem Steep Increase in Scottish Secessionist Support
BP gets into the debate about Scotland’s independence, endorsing Sir Ian Wood’s report about challenges of Edinburgh and London in case of a split up.
“As a major investor in Scotland – now and into the future – BP believes that the future prospects for the North Sea are best served by maintaining the existing capacity and integrity of the United Kingdom,” Bob Dudley, BP Group Chief executive said in a note released on Wednesday.
According to Dudley, opportunities are smaller than in the past. This should be an element to keep in mind while assessing Scottish claims.
“Our business invests for decades into the future. It is important our plans are based on a realistic view of the North Sea’s future potential and the challenges the industry faces in continuing to operate here,” Dudley commented, referring to a recent report by the business organisation N-56 that suggested that offshore unconventionals could double Scottish oil and gas reserves.
Also on Wednesday, Prime Minister David Cameron intervened to restrict a steep rise in secessionist support.
"I would be heartbroken if this family of nations ... was torn apart," Cameron said as reported by Reuters.
