Sky News: Q&A: Britain's Gas 'Fracking' Row Explained

Tremors in the Blackpool area have been blamed on attempts to extract gas deep underground. Here the controversial process is explained.

:: What is fracking?

Shale gas is contained within a layer of rock formed from deposits of mud, silt and other matter.

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking", involves drilling into the ground injecting high pressure water and chemicals in order to shatter shale rock and release trapped natural gas.

:: Why do companies want to do it?

Britain has high resources of shale gas in areas including the Pennines – a supply that could offer an alternative to other fossil fuels and be worth billions of pounds.
