Focus: Bulgaria is not Russia’s Trojan horse in Europe

Bulgaria is not Russia’s Trojan horse in Europe, President Rosen Plevneliev told the Bulgarian community in Chicago.

On the fifth day of his visit to the U.S., the Bulgarian head of state met with the largest Bulgarian community in the U.S. in the Chicago Botanic Garden. The hall was full of Bulgarians, most of them accompanied by their children.

A Bulgarian named Rusev, who has been living in the U.S. for 50 years, asked the President what the political and trade relations between Bulgaria and Russia are.

“We hear Boyko Borisov frequently visits the Russian embassy,” he added.

“Frankly speaking, I am not informed whether the prime minister goes to the Russian embassy. You can be sure that the Bulgarian Prime Minister works for the European integration of the country and for the strategic partnership with many countries – the U.S. and why not Russia – they are a priority that even the people have recognized long ago,” answered the President.

However, he highlighted Bulgaria was not Russia’s Trojan horse in Europe. When the President said this, there was loud applause in the hall.

“Bulgaria is a bridge for trade, cooperation between Europe and Russia. We will show solidarity with the European positions on this issue,” he specified.

“Yes, we will seek mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia. Yes, a lot of things connect us, but the natural gas price for Bulgaria is USD 600/1,000 cubic meters and for all other European states it is USD 400 at the highest and I do not understand this fact. These are 3 billion cubic meters of gas and a difference of USD 200, for Bulgaria, this is USD 600 million which the Bulgarian companies lose. This money, if the gas price for Bulgaria was the average European one, would have remained in the Bulgarian companies and with it they could have paid higher salaries and bought new machines. I am the President who took a very categorical position from the very first day – energy efficiency and energy diversification,” the head of state said further.  MORE
