Focus: Reformist Bloc: South Stream is pushing us away from Europe
Bulgaria’s EU membership is facing challenges right now and things are getting more serious with the South Stream gas pipeline project driving the fallout, spokesman of the Reformist Bloc and leader of DSB Radan Kanev said on Friday.
In his words, there is a tangible anti-European campaign underway in the country, meant to put Russian interests on the agenda in Bulgaria. One step in that direction was the Parliament’s decision to exempt the offshore section of South Stream from the EU’s Third Energy Package. Another step was minister Stoynev’s backlash at the European Parliament’s resolution against the Gazprom-led project.
According to Kanev, if Bulgaria kept oscillating between Brussels and Moscow, the EU could focus on euro area matters and marginalize Bulgaria and Romania as inferior member states of the bloc. To stop that from happening, Bulgaria should initiate the creation of a single energy union, Kanev said, quoted by Presa daily.
