Canada claims 13 spots on Global Cleantech 100

Canadian companies have claimed 13 spots on Cleantech Group’s 2022 Global Cleantech 100 list of companies active in mitigating climate change, released January 13.

From nearly 11,000 nominations from more than 94 countries, 100 companies, representing cleantech investments of about $11.3bn, were selected. North American companies claimed 63 spots, 30 are headquartered in Europe and Israel, and seven are from Asia Pacific countries.

“Cleantech Group released the Global Cleantech 100 list, recognising companies that represent the private, independent and for-profit companies best positioned to deliver solutions that will take us from commitments to actions on the road to net zero emissions by 2050,” Canadian energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson said. “The fact that 13 of the top 100 companies are Canadian is a testament to Canada’s leadership role in the global clean energy transition.”

Among the Canadian companies that made the list are Carbicrete and CarbonCure Technologies, which are developing technologies to sequester CO2 in concrete building products, Vancouver’s Carbon Engineering, which is developing direct air capture technology capable of removing 1mn mt/year of CO2 from the atmosphere from a single facility, Ekona Power, which is developing technology to produce low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas, Montreal-based GHGSat, which is deploying a constellation of satellites to track methane emissions from point sources around the world, and Vancouver-based Svante, which is developing low-cost technology to capture CO2 from industrial sources.

“With each company making significant contributions to accelerate national and global net-zero targets, they are the driving force behind what makes Canada one of the global leaders in this sector,” Wilkinson added. “They are the product of Canada’s strong and dynamic cleantech sector, which contributed C$31bn to Canada’s gross domestic product in 2020.”
