Canada to gauge interest in carbon storage, transportation

Natural Resources Canada has opened intake for expressions of interest (EOI) for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) research, development and demonstration (RD&D) projects focused on carbon storage and transportation, it said January 25.

Funded under Canada’s Energy Innovation Program, RD&D projects and related science activities selected through the intake will help develop permanent geological storage of carbon and technologies that support the safe and efficient transportation of CO2. It is also expected to support planning and development of CO2 storage and transportation hubs.

“Many of the technologies needed to reach our goal of net zero by 2050 are still in various stages of development, including decarbonisation solutions such as CCUS,” Natural Resources Canada minister Jonathan Wilkinson said. “The government of Canada is investing in innovative clean energy RD&D projects to help grow the economy, fight climate change and create good jobs for Canadian workers.”

This is the second intake under a broader CCUS RD&D call launched in July 2022, and it will remain open until April 17, after which successful applicants will be invited to submit full project proposals. A third call for EOI for RD&D focused on utilisation projects will be launched later this year.
