Canada’s Net Gas Exports Down Again in 2018

Canada’s net natural gas pipeline exports fell for the third consecutive year in 2018, the National Energy Board (NEB) said April 10, reflecting the continuing loss of market share in the US, the country’s only export market.

Net pipeline exports in 2018 fell 4.6%, to 57.5bn m3 (5.6bn ft3) from 60.3bn m3 in 2017. The value of net exports dropped nearly 9%, to C$6.1bn (US$4.6bn), reflecting lower prices and reduced demand for Canadian gas combined with robust US domestic gas supplies.

Pipeline exports dropped to 80.2bn m3 from 85.3bn m3, while pipeline imports from the US fell to 22.7bn m3 in 2018 after surging to 24.9bn m3 in 2017 from 21.9bn m3 in 2016.

“The majority of natural gas imports flow by pipeline across the border into Ontario,” the NEB said. “Recently, net imports have increased at the areas bordering the US East because pipeline reversals have allowed growing Appalachian gas production to flow into Ontario.”
