Canadian drillers roar back to work after holiday break
The active rig count in Canada, as measured by Baker Hughes’ January 6 survey, roared back to strength after the holiday break, with a gain of 105 from the December 30 count.
Active rigs in the country increased to 189 from 84, the closely-watched Baker Hughes survey shows, with gas rigs up 17 to 76 and oil rigs up 88 to 113.

Alberta led the post-holiday activity rebound, with active rigs rising to 141 from 69, while Saskatchewan posted a 27-rig gain, to 29. BC added two active rigs, bringing the count there to 15.
The US showed a different picture, with the number of active rigs down by seven from December 30, the biggest weekly decline since September 21. Total active rigs in the US fell to 772 from 779, with gas rigs down by four, to 152, and oil rigs off by three, to 618.
The active count in the Permian Basin was unchanged at 353, but the Haynesville Basin saw a drop of three active rigs. The active count in the “Others” category fell to 117 from 123.
