Chevron, Caterpillar team up on hydrogen

US major Chevron said September 8 it teamed up with heavy machinery company Caterpillar to review hydrogen as a fuel source for rail and marine vessels.

“The goal of the collaboration is to confirm the feasibility and performance of hydrogen for use as a commercially viable alternative to traditional fuels for line-haul rail and marine vessels,” Chevron said. “The collaboration also seeks to demonstrate hydrogen’s use in prime power.”

Chevron is already making strides in the energy sector, expanding on a joint venture with biomethane producer Brightmark last month. The partners announced “additional equity investments” would support the construction of the infrastructure necessary to bring 10 dairy farm-sourced methane projects to commercial service across Midwest states and South Dakota.

The collaboration with Caterpillar includes demonstration projects for hydrogen-fuelled railcars and associated infrastructure, work that Chevron said would begin immediately.

“This agreement supports our commitment to investing in new products, technologies and services to help our customers achieve their climate-related objectives as they build a better, more sustainable world,” said Joe Creed, the group president for Caterpillar’s energy and transportation segment.

Chevron did not indicate the source of the hydrogen or how it would be produced.
