For the January to March 2017 period shale gas output was 2.67bn m3, up 17.4% year on year. The rise in production is mainly due to the rapid expansion of production in the Changning - Weiyuan national shale gas demonstration area in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.
China’s overall natural gas production in March was 13.6bn m3, up 10.5% on year.
China has been making concrete efforts to encourage clean energy sources to tackle problem of urban pollution. It is gradually shifting away from traditional energy sources such as coal. The country is working to build substantial shale gas infrastructure. Despite many hurdles, the industry has managed to achieve significant progress in last few years.
