China’s West-East Pipe Volume to Rise in 2018

China’s West-East Gas Pipeline is expected to transport 58bn m3 of natural gas in 2018, about 1.3bn m3 or 2% more than in 2017, CNPC said February 6.

This year, the West-East Gas Pipeline Company, which operates the pipeline, will focus on operational optimisation, cost reduction and efficiency improvement, the company said.

The West–East Gas Pipeline is a set of natural gas pipelines which run from the western part of China to the east. Its construction was begun in 2002 and it was put into trial operation in October 2004, with full commercial supplies of natural gas commenced in January 2005.

Gas is supplied from the Tarim Basin gas fields in Xinjiang province. The Changqing gas area in Shaanxi province is a secondary gas source.

China's natural gas consumption saw as sharp spike in 2017 as government prompted industries and households to switch from coal to gas. China's natural gas output too increased significantly last year, driven by higher demand.
