Confusion On Sanctions Against Russia Continues
The Council of the EU prolonged the application of EU restrictive measures against Russia, extending asset freeze and travel bans for 150 person and 37 entities accused to interfere with Ukraine’s sovereignty.
‘The asset freeze and travel bans against 150 persons and 37 entities have been extended for a further 6 months, that is until 15 September 2015. This decision gives legal effect to a political decision taken at the Foreign Affairs Council on 29 January 2015’ reads a note released by European authorities on Friday.
However, according to Reuters, EU leaders might not find common ground at their summit next week. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said there will not be unanimity for the rollover of the sanctions “that are due in July.”
Different uncertainties hang over the trilateral meeting on the summer package. The European Union has not received confirmation from Ukraine and Russia about their presence in the meeting on March 20 to discuss gas supplies for the summer.
The winter packages expires at the end of the month.
