The villagers of Balcombe already face the prospect of fracking on their doorstep — now they have learnt that the company behind the plans intends to burn waste gas from a 12-metre tower.

Cuadrilla Resources, the shale oil and gas explorer, has applied for a flaring permit from the Environment Agency when it drills its first exploration well in West Sussex this year.

It is common while drilling for oil to find gas as well.  Cuadrilla proposes to use a flare stack equipped with a continous burning pilot flame to burn off any gas that is produced
