Denmark: Politicians Examine Shale Gas
Due to the ongoing international debate on shale gas, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Buildings, Mr. Martin Lidegaard, recommended a technical presentation by government experts to the members of the sub-committee for Climate, Energy and Building, in order to become better informed about the technical aspects of shale gas exploration and production, and the status of Danish and European legislation related to safe utilization of this new energy source in a European perspective.
During the presentation, which was held on March 29, experts from the Danish Energy Agency, the Nature Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency outlined the basics of shale gas, the potential for exploring shale gas in Denmark, the technical characteristics of hydraulic fracturing and groundwater protection, as well as related environmental regulations.
After the technical review, the members of the committee and the minister had an opportunity to ask follow-up questions to further enhance their insight on shale gas in a Danish context.
