Dragon Oil Signs Contract for Two Afghan Oil, Gas Blocks

Dragon Oil on Tuesday signed a formal contract with Afghnaistan’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum for exploration and production sharing contracts (EPSC) for two blocks, Sanduqli and Mazar-i-Sharif, of the Afghan-Tajik Phase 1 Oil & Gas Tender.

Late last month, Afghanistan gave a go ahead to an international consortium to explore for hydrocarbons in two blocks in the northern part of the country. The three firms comprising the consortium awarded the contract for the two Afghan-Tajik blocks are Dragon Oil (40%), TPAO (40%) and Ghazanfar Group (20%).

The Sanduqli block borders Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in the north and spans 2,583 square kilometres. The Mazar-i-Sharif block borders Uzbekistan in the north and has an area of 2,715 square kilometres.

The are believed to contain significant accumulations of both oil and gas.
