Dual-fuel Engines Help Power Greek LNG Tanker Boom
The Greek boom in liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers continues.
German company MAN Diesel & Turbo has announced it will supply the engines for two new Greek LNG carriers. According to shipbroking agency Clarkson, eight Greek shipowners have spent $7.4 billion (€5.8 bn) on orders for 38 such vessels, almost half of all global orders.
The engines, MAN 51/60DF, can burn both gaseous and liquid fuels simultaneously. The new order covers a total of 34 MW installed power per vessel, each of will be 160,000 cubic metre capacity and DFDE (dual-fuel diesel electrical) driven.
The customer is Athens-based Alpha Tankers and Freighters International Ltd. The engines will be built at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg plant in Bavaria.
