Eagle LNG in Aruba regasification project

US LNG supplier Eagle LNG said December 9 it has entered into a long-term supply contract with WEB Aruba, a local power and water utility, to establish an LNG receiving and regasification terminal on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

The Aruba LNG terminal will be located at Refineria di Aruba, an existing industrial location in San Nicolas, Aruba, and deliver regasified LNG to WEB’s nearby Balashi power plant. Using LNG for power generation takes advantage of WEB’s existing investment in dual-fuel engines, improving performance and stabilising fuel rates at historically low prices while supporting the introduction of more intermittent renewable power generation.

“LNG fits in WEB Aruba’s vision of cleaner, greener and fuel oil free production and we are working towards sustainable water desalination and energy production and supply,” WEB Aruba CEO Serapio Wever said. “We welcome LNG as a transition fuel that eventually should lead to a mix of 50% renewable energy sources and 50% alternative fuels.”

The infrastructure investment is estimated at about $100mn in Aruba, creating up to 100 local jobs during construction and “highly-skilled” operating jobs. Moving to LNG-fuelled power from heavy fuel oil or diesel will reduce CO2 emissions by 30%, NOX emissions by 75%, particulates by 90% and SOXemissions by 99%.

The US Embassy Curacao provided early support for the Aruba project through the US Commerce Department’s advocacy program, which encourages US exports while offering counsel on doing business in a foreign country.
