Edison completes first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering in Trieste
Italy’s Edison has completed its first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation in the port of Trieste in Italy, the company announced on July 30. This operation marks the first such activity in the Adriatic Sea and was conducted using the LNG carrier Ravenna Knutsen, which has been supplying the Ravenna LNG coastal depot since 2021.
The recent operation signifies the beginning of more ship-to-ship bunkering activities in the port of Trieste, the company said. The Ravenna Knutsen, a small LNG carrier available to Edison through a contract with Norwegian shipowner Knutsen OAS Shipping, was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries at the Mipo shipyard in South Korea.
Fabrizio Mattana, executive vice president for gas assets at Edison, highlighted the potential for emission reductions in the maritime sector, noting that LNG is a viable solution. “To consolidate our market presence, we are also developing a second LNG coastal depot in Southern Italy and a second LNG carrier ready for bunkering operations. These concrete steps confirm our commitment to sustainable mobility in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea,” Mattana said.
The Ravenna Knutsen can transport up to 30,000 m3 of LNG via three high-nickel steel tanks insulated to withstand cryogenic temperatures.
