Eneos, Jera to work on hydrogen quality standard system

Japanese companies Eneos Corporation and Jera have initiated a research and development project related to the establishment of a large-scale CO2-free hydrogen supply chain, the companies said on June 9. The objective of the project is to establish a hydrogen quality standard system for industrial use by studying hydrogen properties and specifications for different applications.

The project is commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

As part of the project, Eneos will research hydrogen properties for a wide range of industrial fuel applications, while Jera will evaluate the impact of aromatic compounds and other contaminants on power generation applications. The goal is to standardise hydrogen properties for each application, ultimately leading to the establishment of a quality standard system for hydrogen.

Eneos plans to establish a CO2-free hydrogen supply chain in Japan and globally. One option being explored by the company for hydrogen storage and transportation is the use of methylcyclohexane (MCH), an organic hydrogen carrier that can leverage existing infrastructure in the petroleum industry.

Jera is aiming to cut CO2 emissions from its domestic and international operations to zero by 2050. It is promoting the adoption of greener fuels and pursuing CO2-free thermal power generation.

The research and development project is scheduled to take place from fiscal year 2023 to fiscal year 2025.
