Eni and Congo celebrate successful start-up of LNG production

Eni and Congo on February 27 announced the successful commencement of LNG production in the country. The first LNG cargo is currently being loaded and will sail to Piombino’s regasification terminal, in Italy, in the coming days. This milestone marks African nation's entry into the group of LNG exporting nations.

The Congo LNG project leverages Marine XII gas resources and existing production facilities in a new, phased approach that will allow it to reach approximately 4.5bn m3/year of gas liquefaction capacity at plateau, as well as zero routine gas flaring.

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi commented: “The first cargo of LNG from Congo is the result of the strong commitment of Eni and its partners and of the unwavering support of the Government of the Republic of the Congo.”

The Tango FLNG vessel has a liquefaction capacity of approximately 1bn m3/year and is moored alongside the Excalibur floating storage unit (FSU).

A second FLNG unit is under construction at China’s Wison Heavy Industry. The 380 m long and 60 m wide vessel will be anchored at a water depth of around 40 m and will be able to store over 180,000 m3 of LNG and 45,000 m3 of LPG.
