Eni, KMG begin work on 250 MW renewables-gas power plant in Kazakhstan

Italy's Eni and Kazakh state-owned KazMunayGas (KMG) have commenced construction on their joint 250 MW hybrid renewables-gas power plant project in Zhanaozen, Kazakhstan, Eni announced on July 16.

This development follows an agreement signed earlier this year between the two companies, marking the inception of Kazakhstan’s first hybrid power plant integrating solar, wind, and gas power to produce and supply low-carbon electricity to KMG subsidiaries in the region.

The project features a hybrid combination of renewable power plants, developed in collaboration with Eni’s subsidiary Plenitude, alongside a gas power plant to balance and stabilise electricity production. This innovative approach aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of power supply in the region while contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions, Eni said.

In January, Eni also signed a memorandum of cooperation with the sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna (SK). This collaboration encompasses various energy transition projects, including the potential replication of the hybrid renewables model in different regions of Kazakhstan.
