Eni picks China's Wison for Congo FLNG work

Italy’s Eni has signed a contract with China’s Wison Heavy Industry for the construction and installation of a floating LNG (FLNG) unit with a capacity of 2.4mn metric tons/year to be deployed offshore the Republic of Congo, it said on December 22.

The 380 m long and 60 m wide vessel will be anchored at a water depth of around 40 m and will be able to store over 180,000 m3 of LNG and 45,000 m3 of LPG.

“Preliminary activities have already started, with long lead items ordered and steel cut of cryogenic tanks occurred on December 20,” Eni said.

This facility will be the second FLNG to be deployed in the Republic of Congo, the first one being 0.6mn mt/yr Tango FLNG, with LNG production expected to begin in 2023. With the second FLNG, the overall LNG production capacity on Marine XII will reach 3mn mt/yr in 2025, Eni said.

The company said that both initiatives are part of the Marine XII gas valorisation plan, in line with its strategy to leverage gas equity.

The Republic of Congo is known mostly as a source of oil production, but it also holds substantial natural reserves, estimated at at least 10 trillion ft3, or 283bn m3, at the end of 2021. But much of the total represents associated gas that developers to date have mostly re-injected into offshore oilfields to maintain reservoir pressure.
