Eni explores Egyptian hydrogen prospects

Italian oil and gas company Eni said July 8 it was examining the potential for hydrogen production in the Egyptian market, its second such announcement in as many days.

Eni said it signed an agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to examine the commercial feasibility of producing green and blue hydrogen in the Egyptian market. The agreement “comes in the framework of Egypt’s strategy for energy transition, diversifying energy mix and developing hydrogen projects in cooperation with major international companies,” the Italian company said.

The Egyptian deal came one day after Eni said it would work in Algeria alongside state-owned Sonatrach on a pilot project to produce green hydrogen. The companies said they would examine the commercial feasibility of using electricity from wind and solar facilities to electrolyse water, splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen.

Eni is active in both countries' oil and gas sectors as a key producer. No timeline on hydrogen development was offered by Eni regarding either agreement.
