Essar ramps up CBM production in India

Indian coalbed methane (CBM) company Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (EOGEPL) on June 7 said its output crossed 0.8mn m3/day and is expected to reach 1mn m3/day post commissioning of the Urja Ganga pipeline.

The 2,650-km Urja Ganga pipeline will pass through the eastern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. The pipeline is being further extended from Barauni to Guwahati in the northeastern state of Assam through a 729-km pipeline.

EOGEPL CEO Pankaj Kalra said the importance of domestic gas in the energy basket for any developing country like India is extremely crucial considering the uptrend in gas demand, price and rising import bills. The company has so far invested in excess of 40bn rupees ($510mn) in exploration to the commercial development of its Raniganj East CBM block in east India.

“Crossing the 0.8mn m3/day mark has aligned the production curve with the forecast available enabling EOGEPL to further escalate field activities and efforts toward the next goal of 1mn m3/day,” Kalra said. “The future ramp-up will be an integration of re-fracturing and revival of wells, alongside fresh technological applications, many of which will boast of its first time application in CBM in India and would be in line with EOGEPL’s pioneering endeavours of CBM in the country.”

EOGEPL at present operates around 350 wells in the Raniganj East block.
