WSJ: EU, Russia, Ukraine to Meet on Energy Security
Energy chiefs from Russia, Ukraine and the European Union will meet Friday in Warsaw, Poland, for talks on energy security, the European Commission said Tuesday.
The EU Energy Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan and the Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak are meeting jointly for the first time since the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine, which has sparked fears about the supply of gas to Europe.
The EU will seek assurances from Moscow that it won't halt its gas supplies to Europe amid the deepening crisis between Ukraine and Russia. It also wants to discuss Kiev's spiraling debts to OAO Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, which this month ramped up the price of the gas it sells to Ukraine as it scrapped earlier discounts, a person familiar with the discussions said.
