Europe to Discuss New Round of Sanctions Against Russia
Europe will discuss a new round of sanctions against Russia, while working on ways to promote reforms in Ukraine.
“Obviously, we will discuss Ukraine which is the main issue on the agenda today. We will for sure discuss the sanctions, but not only the sanctions - because we all know very well that if we work only on that, but not on the other two tracks, even sanctions will not work. We need to work more on the reforms of Ukraine. We will start right know by meeting Foreign Minister Klimkin and we will sign an agreement that allows the European Union to start a mission to assist the Ukrainian authorities on restructuring the civilian security of the country. We will start the mission as of 1 December 2014” High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini said on Monday, ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council.
According to a press note released by the European Union, authorities in Brussels will also speak about the relations with Moscow, seeking out measures for a solution of the crisis.
Mogherini’s remarks come after an overheated G20 summit in Australia, which saw Russia’s President Vladimir Putin increasingly isolated.
On Friday, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with European Commission for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič.
‘The Head of Government stressed the solidarity of the positions of Ukraine and the European Union on energy security issues and accentuated the importance of further collaboration to diversify sources of energy supplies,’ reads a statement released after the meeting.
