Focus: European Commission recommends Serbia suspends South Stream project

European Commission (EC) has recommended to Serbia it suspends the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline project, the Serbian online news edition Politika reported.

The EC recommended the construction activities under the South Stream project on the territory of Serbia are suspended until it is brought in line with EU legislation.

”The EC does not oppose the project as it is important the ways and sources of supplying the Western Balkans with gas are diversified. The South Stream [project] will present one more way [of this] but not a new source of supplying gas. The EC is not concerned over the gas pipeline itself but over the way the project is being realised,” the EC said, it was announced.
