EC Could Agree on EU Climate Change Strategy on Friday, Says Gozi
The European Council could agree on a common strategy to cope with climate change, reaching a deal as soon as on Friday, Sandro Gozi, Italy’s Secretary of State for European Affairs, said on Tuesday.
“Everybody has embarked on the fight against climate change in a pragmatic manner and we can say that an agreement is possible… and that there are… all the necessary conditions to achieve an ambitious understanding,” Gozi said in preparation for the European Council, which will take place in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
According to a note released by the office of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, European heavyweights agreed with Gozi about a possible deal.
“There are the right conditions to find an agreement at Thursday and Friday’s summit,” Maros Sefcovic, Vice President of the European Commission, commented.
The European Council is expected to take a final decision on the new climate and energy policy framework. It should also come up with a solution to increase Europe's energy security.
