ExxonMobil finds "high-quality" gas off Cyprus, says local govt

ExxonMobil has found a "high-quality" gas reservoir off Cyprus at the Glaucus-2 appraisal well at Block 10 off Cyprus, the local government reported on March 21.

Drilling work has been completed at the well, which was appraising the 2019 Glaucus discovery, Cyprus' energy ministry said in a statement. Production tests were also carried out, and ExxonMobil and its partner QatarEnergy will proceed with a detailed analysis, to better understand the characteristics of the reservoir and assess potential options for its commercial development.

Neither ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy have commented on the result.

The Glaucus gas discovery has previously been assessed by the Cypriot government to be 5-8 trillion ft3 in size. The discovery well was drilled to a depth of 4,200 m below sea level, in waters 2,063 m deep.

The Stena Forth rig began drilling the Cypriot well in December last year. ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum had hoped to spud the borehole earlier, but postponed plans in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Late last year the pair also secured drilling rights to the offshore Block 5 off Cyprus, adjacent to Block 10.
