Module fabrication begins in China for Woodfibre LNG
Fabrication of the first module for the 2.1mn tonnes/year Woodfibre LNG export terminal near Squamish, BC is now underway in China, a Woodfibre LNG spokesman told NGW July 31.
All of the project’s 19 modules will be built at the Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW) steelyards in Qingdao City, China. McDermott is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor on the Woodfibre LNG project and McDermott Wuchuan is a joint venture between McDermott and China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
“While Woodfibre LNG is scheduled to officially begin construction on site in September, the start of fabrication of the plant modules is one of the first physical milestones for the facility,” the Woodfibre LNG spokesman said in an e-mail to NGW.
Woodfibre LNG’s liquefaction module is the largest of the 19, weighing close to 11,000 tonnes with a footprint roughly the size of a football field.
Collectively, all 19 modules will weigh an estimated 35-40,000 tonnes. They will include some eight kilometres of associated piping, 495 kilometres of cables and 166 pieces of associated specialised equipment.
