Helsinki Times: Finland must diversify its energy sources
Finland must not exaggerate the risks associated with energy trade with Russia, emphasises Pami Aalto, a professor at the department of political science and international relations of the University of Tampere.
The country should, however, seek to diversify its energy sources, Aalto stated on Wednesday in a seminar on energy security organised by the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
In addition, Aalto viewed that the Fennovoima nuclear project in Pyhäjoki should be kept in domestic hands, suggesting that Finland should even consider introducing a ceiling on foreign investments in the Finnish energy sector.
Russia, he viewed, is unlikely to reduce its sales of oil and natural gas to Europe due to their significance for its economy. “The administration of foreign policy has a major role in maintaining reasonable relations with the producers, which in our case is Russia,” Aalto said.
