Fracking Safe According to Polish Case Study
Fracturing operations in Lebien, Pomerania did not result in any dangerous impacts to the environment concluded the first study conducted for the Ministry of Environment by Polish Geological Institute (PGI) experts.
The study results, sent to the ministry in November 2011, still have not been published. However, Natural Gas Europe learned unofficially from sources at the Institute that examinations in Lebien did not yield any disturbing information.
The study focused on fracturing operations on the single horizontal well in Lebien LE-2H on the Lebork concession. Schlumberger completed a 13-stage stimulation last year for Lane Energy, a subsidiary of 3Legs Resources and is one of the most advanced in shale gas exploration efforts in Poland.
This complex study included water table checks, gas emissions control, seismic impact description as well as noise level and fluids toxicity measurements.
According to the sources in the Institute, some supervision of fluids utilization and disposal was also conducted.
The PGI is ready to extend its program to other places, where fracturing operations, especially in horizontal wells are to be conducted, although further studies may depend upon the availability of financing sources and an openness on behalf of the companies.
