Environmental Leader: Fracking Chemical Disclosure Will Increase Risk, Industry Group Says

The EPA’s proposed rules requiring companies to disclose the composition of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing will lead to lost jobs and increased product risk, according to comments submitted to the agency by the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates.

Some SOCMA members, the majority of which are small businesses, manufacture chemicals used in oil and gas exploration, including fracking. Protecting trade secrets is important, the organization says, specifically in an industry where it is difficult to launch a product into commerce.

SOCMA says it supports enhancing public confidence in the chemical industry — but transparency done the wrong way can lead to mining from foreign competitors before chemicals enter commerce.
