And yet this is one of the main fronts in the fight between those who want to protect the countryside and those who want to safeguard the country's energy security.
Shale gas is regarded by many as the energy source that could revolutionise Western economies, freeing them from their dependence on imported oil and gas.
The US is now a net exporter of energy thanks to its use of the technology. But, thus far at least, the technology hasn't taken root in the UK. And that is in part because of the struggle being fought in West Sussex.
