Freeport LNG seeks permission for next restart stage
Freeport LNG filed a request with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on January 30 seeking authorisations to continue its sequential restart of the facility, which has been out of commission since a June 8 fire.
The latest request seeks permission to begin the nitrogen cooldown of LNG pipes from the liquefaction trains to the LNG storage tanks and the introduction of hydrocarbons to Unit 13 (Train 3) of the three-train facility. Smaller recirculation lines would also be cooled down.

“With respect to the introduction of hydrocarbons into Unit 13 for LNG train commissioning and cooldown, this process would entail flowing treated natural gas from Freeport’s upstream natural gas pretreatment facility through the feed gas pipeline into the export facility in order to perform remaining system purges in Unit 13,” Freeport says in its request.
This stage would entail cleaning Unit 13’s main cryogenic heat exchanger (MCHE), restarting the train’s refrigeration compressors, performing cooldown on the MCHE and related refrigeration and piping systems and begin the initial production of LNG in Train 3.
“Subsequent approvals will be necessary to commence Loop 1 LNG circulation and ship loading to Dock 1, as well as transition of Unit 13 into full, commercial operations,” Freeport said.
Freeport has asked FERC to respond to its latest request by February 1.
