Gail awards contract for green hydrogen project in India
Indian state-owned gas marketing firm Gail on May 12 said it has awarded a contract to set up a proton exchange membrane electrolyser in India. The project would be installed at the company’s Vijaipur Complex in the state of Madhya Pradesh and would be based on renewable power.
The project has been designed to produce around 4.3 metric tons/day of hydrogen. It is scheduled to be commissioned by November next year. The project has been awarded to a vendor having a domestic value addition of more than 50%, Gail said.
In January this year, Gail started mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system in Indore, a major city in Madhya Pradesh. Hydrogen blended natural gas is being supplied to Avantika Gas, Gail's joint venture with HPCL, which is a city gas distribution company operating in Indore. To date, Gail has been successful in blending up to 2% hydrogen in natural gas in the network.
