Gail JV progresses coal gasification-based urea project
Talcher Fertilizers (TFL), a joint venture of four Indian state-run companies, has concluded the financial closure of its coal gasification-based urea project located at Talcher in east India, Gail, one of the partners in the joint venture, said on June 28.
The joint venture comprises Gail, Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers, Coal India and Fertilizers Corporation of India (FCIL). TFL has been mandated by the government of India to revive the erstwhile Talcher plant of FCIL by setting up a new greenfield coal gasification-based urea plant with an installed capacity of 1.27mn metric tons/year, Gail said.

Gail said that the Talcher plant shall reduce dependence on imported natural gas for the production of urea leading to a reduction in the LNG import bill. Further, the gasification process is expected to emit negligible SOx, NOx and free particulate as compared to directly coal-fired processes thereby supporting commitments made by India under Paris Agreement, 2016.
