Gas producer EQT doubles down on responsible development

The largest natural gas producer in North America, EQT, said April 15 it approved of a congressional effort to take down weaker emission rules enacted by the Trump administration.

EQT said it supported two resolutions in the US Congress that would repeal the 2020 Methane Rescission Rule from the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2020, the EPA loosened standards on emissions of methane and volatile organic carbons from new oil and gas facilities, part of the Trump administration’s effort to break up bureaucracy for the benefit of US energy dominance.

Instead, EQT said it was supporting a return to earlier rules in place before Trump came to office as a uniform federal standard.

“We believe the responsible development of natural gas will help meet future global energy demand as we address climate change together,” the company said. “EQT is committed to working with elected officials, regulators and other stakeholders to establish sound environmental policies that promote increased access to clean and affordable energy sources."

EQT’s announcement followed a similar commitment to have the majority of its production in the Marcellus shale basin certified as responsibly-sourced gas (RSG) by the end of this year.

Working with certification standards developed by Equitable Origin and MiQ, EQT this month will start certifying gas produced from more than 200 of its Marcellus well pads in Pennsylvania, which collectively produce about 4bn ft3/day of natural gas.

When the joint Equitable Origin/MiQ certification is complete, EQT’s certified responsible natural gas production will account for about 4.5% of all US natural gas production, more than any other US producer’s entire output, whether certified or not, the company said.
