Nikola to develop German hydrogen fuel networks

US-based Nikola Corp. said April 14 it signed a letter of intent to help roll out a pipeline network in Germany to supply hydrogen filling stations in the country.

Nikola agreed the deal with alternative-fuels company IVECO and OGE, which owns and operates some 12,000 km of natural gas pipeline in Germany. The letter of intent describes the primary focus as developing fuelling solutions in Germany, particularly for commercial trucks, in support of the broader effort to build up the European transportation network to accommodate fuel-cell electric vehicles.

"We believe this collaboration, in particular, presents a very compelling long-term fuelling distribution solution that we expect to advance industry and overall market adoption of FCEV technologies,” Pablo Koziner, the president of Nikola’s energy and commercial division, said.

The European Commission identified hydrogen and fuel cell technology as a way to help achieve a 60-80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The commission already tabled some €470mn ($563mn) in support for research and development into the new-fuel technology.
