SHIP: Germany: The topic of hydraulic fracturing technology has turned up again in the current coalition agreement (18th legislature) of the CDU, CSU and SPD

“According to current environmentally relevant studies, there is enormous potential risk attached to the use of fracking technology for the unconventional extraction of natural gas – and especially shale gas. The consequences for humans, nature and the environment have not yet been sufficiently clarified by science. Safe drinking water and health are absolute priorities for us.

We reject the use of environmentally toxic substances in the application of fracking technology for the exploration and production of unconventional natural gas deposits. Approval of any fracking application can only be decided upon once necessary fundamental data exist for assessment and can be clarified beyond doubt, ensuring that there can be no fear of an adverse shift in water quality (a principle concern of the Water Supply Act). It is irresponsible, due to a lack of knowledge of the risks involved, to dispose of flowback from fracking operations through the use of environmentally toxic chemicals in injection wells. MORE
