Germany's Hellmann Worldwide expands fleet with electric, bioLNG trucks

German transport and logistics company Hellmann Worldwide Logistics has inducted electric and bio-LNG trucks into its fleet as part of its strategy to reduce its CO2 footprint, it said on May 22.

The company has introduced two new fully electric 40-tonne Volvo swap body trucks, alongside the necessary charging infrastructure, and plans to expand its e-truck fleet by adding four more distribution vehicles by this summer. Additionally, since the beginning of the year, Hellmann has exclusively used bio-LNG to fuel its growing LNG fleet.

The two all-electric 40-tonne trucks will primarily operate on the middle mile routes between Osnabrück and Bremen, covering distances of 550 to 700 km daily. To support these operations, Hellmann is installing a 300 kW charging infrastructure with buffer storage to enable the trucks to run in two shifts. By summer, the company plans to add four more all-electric 16-tonne trucks to facilitate emission-free deliveries in urban areas.

Hellmann sources its bio-LNG from regional production facilities that utilise organic residues, such as liquid manure and dung. The company aims to have more than a third of its trucks running on alternative fuels by mid-year.
