Global NRG Advisory urges UK to prioritise biomethane, carbon capture

UK-based Global NRG Advisory, a consulting firm in the energy sector, has urged the newly elected government to increase the visibility of biomethane and carbon capture, according to CEO Chris Negus in a letter issued on July 8.

Addressing the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, Negus highlighted the key role biomethane can play in the government’s strategy. “The UK is currently the third-largest producer of biomethane in Europe, but with further government support, we could easily achieve higher volumes,” he said.

Negus said that the production of biomethane, especially from waste, offers an additional opportunity to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere through carbon capture and sequestration. “We believe that biomethane can contribute significantly to the government’s clean energy objectives,” he added.

He suggested several measures to support biomethane, including recognising it as part of the clean energy strategy, providing biomethane facilities with access to carbon storage, and granting regulatory status to Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin (RCCOs) to boost market confidence.

In a separate statement published on July 11, Global NRG Advisory announced the launch of its dedicated RNG development platform, Global NRG Renewables, which is developing its first digester site in Bourbon County, Louisville, Kentucky.
