GPS Renewables, BPCL to develop renewable energy, bio-CNG projects in India

GPS Renewables announced on September 17 via LinkedIn that it is entering a 50:50 joint venture with Indian state-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) to develop renewable energy and compressed biogas (CBG) or bio-CNG plants across India.

The partnership aims to meet the CBG blending obligation mandate while supporting BPCL’s energy transition and net-zero initiatives. This is GPS Renewables' second major joint venture with one of India’s largest oil marketing companies, following its recent partnership with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The GPS-IOC venture focuses on integrating biogas technologies to convert organic waste into CBG, a clean fuel.

GPS Renewables is a biofuels company providing technology and project solutions for climate-positive biofuel projects. Starting with captive biogas plants, the company has scaled up to establish some of the world’s largest CBG plants, including its flagship 15 tonnes/day plant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

India introduced a phased mandatory blending of CBG into CNG and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) beginning in fiscal year 2025-26. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, promote sustainable energy, and help achieve net-zero emission goals.
